IYAFP Peru presented the online course: “PROTECTING OURSELVES: Self-care kit in sexual and reproductive health” aimed at young people between 18 and 24 years old. The objective of the course was to present the primary care practices associated with sexual and reproductive health and how to apply them.

Through 5 modules, topics such as sexual and reproductive rights, modern contraception, cervical cancer and breast cancer prevention, and prevention of Sexually Transmitted Illnesses (STIs) were addressed.

Marbet Segovia, IYAFP Project Representative in Peru, said: “We wanted to create an introductory course for young people because many of them have not had Comprehensive Sexual Education at
school or their parents never addressed the subject at home. With the course, it will be possible to recognize vulnerable situations and how to face them to live healthily.”

Alessandra, a young woman who took the Protecting Ourselves course, explains, “It motivated me to participate in a highly informative space since, unfortunately, a culture of sexual health
education does not exist in our country. In the course, I learned about our rights, the correct use of contraceptives and myths around them, the importance of getting preventive screenings for breast cancer and HPV; finally, I also learned to recognize and identify STDs”.

Kiamara, also a student of the course and a young activist, states: “It is important to learn self-care practices because it allows youth to empower themselves about their rights, to know what they are and to know that they should demand them. The State must ensure the protection and guarantee of these rights. I think that bringing youth closer to self-care practices is beneficial because it lets them build healthier and safer relationships”.

For IYAFP in Peru, it is highly relevant to democratize information on Comprehensive Sexual Education. We are committed to creating this type of friendly space to empower young people with the knowledge and the agency to defend their rights.
