RSVP — The Next 30 Years of the Beijing Platform for Action: Intergenerational Partnerships to Advance SRHRJ amidst an Anti-Rights Wave
Hybrid event (In-person and livestream)
Join IYAFP, the Guttmacher Institute, and Population Council for a powerful and forward-thinking parallel event on the margins of CSW69, featuring powerful discussions on intergenerational partnerships as a key condition for advancing SRHRJ and the Beijing Platform for Action amidst anti-rights movements.
The rise of conservative movements globally poses a significant threat to sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice (SRHRJ). These movements advocate for restrictive policies that limit access to contraception, safe abortion, and comprehensive sexuality education, and often spread misinformation about these topics. They frequently employ harmful rhetoric that stigmatizes individuals and communities based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, or reproductive choices. This rising tide of conservatism creates a hostile environment for SRHRJ advocates and undermines the progress made in advancing sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice worldwide.

In addition, recent unilateral actions by state actors like the United States, such as its foreign aid freeze and the reinstatement of the Global Gag Rule (GGR) with the installation of the new conservative U.S. presidency, have far-reaching consequences and undermine the ability of local organizations around the world to provide comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care and advocate for the rights of women and girls.
By restricting access to information and services, such policies and actions can lead to increased rates of unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and maternal mortality.
In this scenario, intergenerational partnerships are essential. They are crucial for effectively defending SRHRJ in the face of these challenges and advancing further on the progress achieved in the thirty years since the Beijing Platform for Action was adopted. Young people are uniquely positioned to understand the evolving needs and perspectives of their peers, while older generations possess invaluable experience and knowledge gained from decades of activism. By fostering meaningful dialogue and collaboration between these groups, we can leverage the strengths of each generation to build a more robust and resilient SRHRJ movement. Together, we can create a powerful and enduring movement that champions sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice for all.
